By contrast, most hollow-points expand by close to 100%, but only make it 9-14" or so, which isn't terrible, but it is kind of borderline I think. Their 9mm round goes like 17-24 inches in gel and expands by about 50%. Of course, given adequate penetration, expansion is just gravy. (That X-ray is here: )Īgent Dove of the FBI would also still be alive most likely if his bullet was an FMJ round instead of a 9mm Winchester Silvertip. 40 caliber hollow-point that stopped short of the heart because it didn't penetrate the sternum. A 9mm RIP Core is like 50 grains or so, so basically the RIP round is kind of like hitting someone with a single pellet of buckshot accompanied by 8 BBs.Įven a lot of highly rated (over-rated?) rounds seem to be under-penetrating. Skin has about the same resistance as 4 inches of muscle tissue, so that basically means that the petals will be just under the skin and the only part of the RIP bullet that really has any effectiveness is the core/base, which is small diameter and also does not penetrate nearly as deeply as it would if it didn't' shed most of its mass near the surface of the wound. An FMJ 9mm will go about 32 inches into gel, which might mean going through and through assuming there is no cover being used by the adversary, but I'd rather have 32 inches in gel than 4 inches which is what the petals on the RIP do: Personally, I think I'd stick with an FMJ over the RIP. ![]() That is the problem with most of the latest self-defense rounds is that too many of them just can't reliably penetrate deep enough to get to vitals. Looks like yet another under-penetrating bullet. Click to expand.I'm not sold on the RIP round. ![]()
